Open Shelving, Done Right
The styling rules we use to keep open shelves feeling collected, not cluttered.
Open shelving fails when it becomes storage. It works when it becomes composition. The rule we keep coming back to is restraint: fewer, better objects, with room to breathe between them.
We stick to a tight palette — a few tones of ceramic, wood, and glass — so the shelf reads as one considered still life instead of a shelf of things. Negative space does as much work as the objects themselves.
Leave Room to Breathe
Group in odd numbers, vary the height, and resist filling every gap. A shelf that looks a little empty in a photo looks exactly right in a room.
