A short guide to picking countertop stone that's as durable as it is beautiful.
Marble is the one everyone pictures, and for good reason — nothing else has quite its depth of veining. But marble is soft and reactive; a squeeze of lemon can etch it. That's a feature if you love a surface that shows its life, and a dealbreaker if you don't.
Quartzite is the quiet workhorse. It reads like marble from across the room but behaves like granite up close — hard, largely stain-resistant, and forgiving of a busy kitchen. When a client wants the look without the anxiety, it's usually where we land.
Why We Favor a Honed Finish
A polished slab bounces light and shows every fingerprint; a honed, matte finish softens the whole surface and hides the day-to-day. It's the difference between a stone that performs and one that simply photographs well.
